Last week Strata-East this week Strata. Same name but different without the east, similar logo etc. Visually they are almost identical but musically worlds apart. Strata Records came out of Detroit and had a more angular earthy funk edge to the music as you are about to hear…
I mean everybody knows and loves that organ grinder by Lyman Woodard Organization that was reissued a few years back by wax poetics and I think (could be wrong usually am) Stuart Baker’s Soul Jazz did a reissue of Maulawi Nururdin’s self-titled proto-street joint above and beyond that the LP’s are an obscure mix of free Jazz, pop jazz, post bop and soul thumpers well the ones I got are. The sound is not to distant for that which was going around Detroit at the time; Tribe records, Doug Hammond, Marcus Belgrave, Phil Ranelin and Wendell Harrison et al Faruq Z. Bey Griot Galaxy and I have banged on enough about them over the past couple of weeks see the posts.
Anyway the label was pretty short lived probably due to funds and stuff i don’t know just guessing there, however, there were over 30 records recorded under Strata Inc all of which are going to be reissued by Amir Abdullah who recently has scooped the exclusive rights to the label. The first of which came out on Tuesday (December 4th) Kenny Cox Clap Clap the Joyful Noise.
He plans to restore and re-release all those that were issued in 73-75 plus a bunch of others from the original master tapes which is very, very exciting for example:
Ortunds by Maulawi Nurudin
Excursions of the City by Maulawi Nurudin
Black Hole by Contemporary Jazz Quintet
